Widget areas
Four areas, not twelve: one shop column and three footer columns.

Four, deliberately. A theme that declares twelve leaves you guessing which one comes out where.
The shop sidebar
It only appears when the shop layout asks for a column and the area has at least one widget. An empty column would leave a 272 px gap that nothing explains, so the shop falls back to full width instead.
